Coincidentally, this adequately expresses my feelings on the finale. Twilight ending up as an alicorn wasn't the problem; bad pacing and execution was.
It felt like two episodes haphazardly threaded together; the cutie mark switching plot line was resolved almost as soon as it began, and the rest was a non-sequitur "all hail the new Princess!" Songs were mostly okay, but they were being used to rush things along, rather than to augment the story.
Honestly I love alicorns, If the entire mane six turned into princesses I'd Jump for joy. But the coronation was a Big disappointment. What did it for me was the songs. They felt even more forced then the rest of the episode, with only 20 min it felt like they were largely cut for time. not at all like "this day Aria"
I keep saying 22 minutes isnt enough time for the FiM team sometimes. I wish Hasbro had at least compromised and given them 2 episodes to properly roll this out.
Couldn't agree more. I will admit I hated the idea of alicorn Twilight from the beginning, BUT I wanted to give it a chance, but this episode didn't convince me. Too fast and too many plot holes.
BUT, I am trying to keep faith after reading comments from the staff like this [link]
So maybe, just maybe they can pull this off. I guess all we can do is hope that Hasbro hasn't done anything else to kill the show and will leave the poor staff alone.
I agree, the episode was good, except it felt too rushed. They should have had it as a two-part episode. Spent more time setting up the switch and showing it being more of a problem than just something that happened and got fixed right away. It also felt weird having all those songs so close together. It was still a good episode, though
I actually found myself really liking the episode. I was worried it would be rushed, only being one part, and I do think they had too many songs (although, I really liked them so it wasn't much of a problem), but I think it was absolutely fine. I'm still kinda hoping Twilight doesn't stay an Alicorn forever, though.
The music was a plus. Daniel Ingram made a comment about how he had to shorten some songs to fit 'em all in ([link]); I hope they'll release some extended versions later!
